A stopover in Dubai or Abu Dhabi can be a separate immigration decision from an airside connection. The UAE government guide describes 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas sponsored through UAE-based airlines and arranged before entry. Travellers already eligible for visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry should check whether a transit application is needed at all.
Start with the itinerary. Collecting bags, changing airports or leaving the terminal for a hotel can make the entry question important even when the ticket is described as a connection.
Compare the airline's actual service
Emirates' current visa table lists 48-hour and 96-hour options as non-extendable. It distinguishes the deadline for first use from the period after arrival, and its own service has booking and ticket requirements. The page also notes that processing charges can apply.
This means a headline describing a free or low-cost government transit visa is not necessarily the complete price of an airline or processing-provider service. Ask for the amount payable for your itinerary and which charges are refundable if travel changes.
Leave room for disruption
When selecting a duration, count the time between actual arrival and onward departure, not just the number of hotel nights. Include a practical buffer for moving between the airport and your accommodation. If the revised flight would exceed the permission, contact the airline and immigration authority rather than assuming an extension will be available.
Prepare passport copies, booking details and accommodation evidence in the requested format. Use identical names and dates across the reservation and application. Every member of a family should have the appropriate documentation; do not assume that one person's approval covers the group.
Finally, save the issued visa offline alongside the onward ticket. Before departure, recheck the live flight schedule and the document's conditions. A short visit is easiest to manage when the immigration permission and the actual itinerary have been reviewed together.
