Switzerland: A Short Visit and a Long Stay Need Different Checks

Why the purpose and duration of your visit come before the application form.

Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Migration explains that entry requirements depend on the purpose and length of a stay. Tourism, family visits, employment and study should therefore be considered separately when you begin planning.

Start with purpose and duration

The Swiss guidance distinguishes short-stay Schengen applications from national type D applications for longer stays. Eligibility and any exemptions must still be checked for the individual traveller.

A holiday itinerary and a plan to relocate may both include an arrival flight and accommodation, but they raise different immigration questions. Describe what you actually intend to do before choosing a form.

Find the responsible representation

The official guidance explains that online applications may be available in some cases; otherwise, applications can be made through a Swiss embassy or consulate. Check which process applies to your place of residence and circumstances.

For your own preparation, keep a note of the official page you used and a list of its requested documents. Make separate folders for identity, travel plans and category-specific evidence.

Prepare an accurate file

Review dates across the application and supporting information. If several people are travelling, check each person’s circumstances rather than assuming the same route applies to the whole group.

Once a decision is issued, read your permission carefully and keep the information relevant to your journey accessible. If you plan to combine Switzerland with destinations outside the Schengen area, verify those entry requirements separately.

This is a guide to finding the right process. For an individual residence, work or study question, use the Swiss authority’s category guidance or qualified advice before making commitments that depend on approval.
