Ireland’s Short-Stay Visa: Check It Separately From Schengen

Start with the Irish visitor route, even when Ireland is one stop on a wider European trip.

Ireland’s immigration service describes a short-stay C tourist visa for visa-required travellers planning a holiday or short break of less than 90 days. Before arranging a wider European journey, check Ireland’s own rules rather than assuming another visa settles the question.

Use the Irish guidance for your circumstances

The official visitor pages provide a starting point for checking whether a visa is required and which conditions apply. The short-stay policy also explains the framework used to assess applications.

If you hold another country’s visa or residence permit, check any relevant Irish scheme or exemption through the official service. Do not assume it applies simply because someone with a different passport has used it.

Keep the trip easy to explain

Write a short itinerary describing why you are visiting, the expected dates and where you intend to stay. Then review the document instructions for your route. Evidence should support the facts you give, rather than add unrelated material to a large file.

If someone is helping fund or host the visit, make sure the account of the arrangement is clear and consistent. For a family trip, keep each traveller’s identity and application information separate.

Prepare for questions and changes

Save a copy of the completed application and the official checklist you used. Keep the reference number somewhere you can find it without searching a long email chain.

Before departure, read the decision and the conditions of the permission issued. If you add another destination or change the purpose of the trip, check the impact before travelling. A short visit, a move to Ireland and a plan to take up work should each be approached through the appropriate official route.
