Explainer · Checked 21 October 2026.
Ireland’s Temporary Protection Transition Scheme opened for applications on 30 September 2026. The official opening notice directs eligible beneficiaries of temporary protection to the application portal and detailed guidance. This article is an October planning explainer about that recent opening.
The scheme offers an alternative immigration permission, but eligibility should be checked as a whole. Under the published policy, the principal applicant needs the required year of residence before 30 September, qualifying employment or self-employment history and continued employment at application and decision. The policy specifies an average annual gross earnings benchmark of €29,432 for the relevant period.
Accommodation and family conditions are consequential
The policy also restricts eligibility where applicants are receiving specified state-supported accommodation. It warns that leaving UCTAT accommodation can have consequences if a person later changes their mind about applying. Do not give up accommodation or existing support simply because a headline says the scheme is open; review the implications with a competent adviser first.
Family inclusion is subject to its own residence and relationship conditions. The scheme does not create a general new entitlement to bring relatives from overseas. A household should identify who is eligible to be included rather than assuming that one person’s eligibility covers everyone.
Prepare one coherent evidence file
Build a timeline of temporary-protection residence, employment and accommodation. Compare names and dates across permission documents, wage records and relationship evidence. Where a document is missing or an absence is difficult to explain, resolve the issue before submitting an incomplete account.
The policy states an application window ending on 30 March 2027. That is a reason to organise the file methodically, not to wait until the final days. Save the submitted application and the documents provided, and keep a record of any later changes in circumstances.
The government’s scheme information hub also points readers toward practical guidance sessions. Use those official materials to understand the trade-offs of a transition before making decisions about work, housing or family applications.
