A UK visa does not automatically remove the need for an Irish visa. Ireland’s Short-Stay Visa Waiver Programme covers specified nationalities and qualifying UK short-stay permissions, subject to conditions. The official guidance says eligible visitors must first have entered the UK using an eligible visa.
The distinction is particularly relevant in October. An official programme information PDF states that the programme is to continue until 31 October 2026 and may be amended. Travellers should therefore check the current live guidance for journeys around or after that date. This article does not assert that the programme has ended or that an extension has been granted.
Do not substitute an ETA for a visa
The current programme page specifically notes the UK’s move to electronic travel authorisations for a number of nationalities. A UK ETA and a qualifying UK short-stay visa are different permissions. Similarly, a long-term UK residence permission should not be assumed to meet conditions written for short-stay visitors.
Before relying on the waiver, make a personal checklist: passport nationality, exact UK permission held, actual entry into the UK, remaining UK permission and proposed Irish visit dates. Compare each item with the current Irish guidance. If any answer is unclear, resolve it with the Irish authorities or the responsible visa office before booking.
Keep the itinerary honest and workable
For a multi-country holiday, write down the order of entry rather than merely the list of destinations. A rule requiring prior UK entry can make the order relevant. Check each accompanying person separately, particularly in families with different nationalities or immigration histories.
Save the official page and the date checked with your travel documents, then review it again close to departure. Avoid treating an old PDF, a social-media post or a travel-agent summary as a guarantee for future travel. The safest planning decision is to establish which current permission covers the actual itinerary, including the return journey.
