South Korea e-Arrival Card: a K-ETA exemption can still leave a declaration to complete

The free arrival declaration and K-ETA are separate systems. Check whether your visa, residence card or travel-authorisation status creates an exemption.

A traveller exempt from applying for K-ETA should still check South Korea's arrival-declaration rules. The official e-Arrival Card guide treats the declaration and electronic travel authorisation as separate systems, with different exemptions.

This distinction matters when a family is travelling on different passports or when someone holds both a visa and a K-ETA.

Check the document you will use to enter

The official guide includes visa holders and K-ETA-exempt travellers among those who may need to declare. It lists holders of qualifying Korean residence cards and K-ETA holders among the excluded groups, while specifically noting that someone holding K-ETA but entering on a visa must complete the arrival card.

Use the official eligibility guide for your combination of documents. Do not read a temporary K-ETA exemption as a universal exemption from arrival paperwork.

The declaration is free

The official service charges no e-Arrival Card fee. Its guide permits filing from three days before arrival, based on Korean Standard Time, and says validity ends after 72 hours or after immigration inspection.

Prepare passport details, the arriving flight and accommodation information. Retain the issuance number sent by email so you can retrieve the record if needed.

Recheck changes to the itinerary

The guide provides a check-and-edit function for changes before immigration inspection. A delayed flight can affect the submission window, so review the current instructions rather than assuming an earlier declaration remains usable indefinitely.

For a practical family checklist, record each person's entry document and declaration requirement in separate rows. Review passport numbers individually even when the accommodation and flights are shared.

If a website requests payment, pause and establish whether it is a commercial intermediary. Start from the official government portal for the free declaration, and verify visa or K-ETA eligibility through the corresponding official service. Finishing one form does not resolve every entry requirement.
