Australia raised its Saudi Arabia advice on 19 October. A 96-hour stopover visa and an operating, suitable flight connection are separate checks.

Checked on 20 October 2026. Travellers considering a Saudi stopover should review current security and flight information before treating a visa offer as a reason to book.

What changed on 19 October

Australia's Smartraveller advisory, updated on 19 October and marked current on 20 October, raised its overall Saudi Arabia advice to do not travel. It identifies serious airport disruption and specifically warns against travel to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

This is Australian government travel advice, not a Saudi announcement cancelling all visas. Travellers of other nationalities should also consult their own government's advice and the operating airline. Do not infer that an available booking proves a flight will operate.

What the stopover permission covers

Visit Saudi describes a stopover stay of up to 96 hours. Saudia's conditions state that its stopover visa is non-extendable and allows one stopover trip per booking. It lists a 90-day validity window from issuance, subject to Foreign Ministry rules.

Saudia also requires a passport with at least six months remaining, subject to applicable bilateral agreements. Charges can include service, medical and insurance components. Check the complete amount shown for your booking instead of assuming that a free-visa promotion means a cost-free journey.

If your connection changes

Ask the airline to confirm the operating itinerary and what happens to the visa if flights are changed or cancelled. Keep the answer with the booking reference and issued permission.

If already in Saudi Arabia, follow local instructions and confirm a departing flight before travelling to the airport, as the advisory recommends. A changed onward ticket should also prompt a fresh check of your permitted stay; do not assume disruption automatically extends it.
