Malta Nomad Residence Permit: connect your foreign contracts to your income

Malta’s remote-work route requires more than a laptop job. Check overseas clients, income evidence and the sequence from application to residence card.

Malta’s Nomad Residence Permit is aimed at eligible adults from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland who work remotely for overseas employers, businesses or clients. Start by checking the nationality exclusions in Residency Malta’s current FAQ; a foreign job alone does not establish eligibility.

Check where the work goes

The programme excludes services provided directly or indirectly to Malta-based companies or individuals, including work for a Maltese subsidiary through a foreign employer. New applicants must demonstrate at least €42,000 gross annual income and qualifying guaranteed income for at least five cumulative months from application.

Before applying, map each contract to the corresponding incoming payments. This makes it easier to spot gaps between your declared work and the evidence you submit.

Build the document trail

The checklist asks for three months of official bank statements showing all transactions and income received directly into the main applicant’s accounts. Employees need contracts explaining their duties and location-independent work; freelancers need service contracts and matching income evidence. Business owners must document company incorporation and ownership.

Prepare the passport copy, CV, signed motivation letter and applicable police certificates. Family applications also require relationship and consent evidence. Follow the checklist’s English translation and PDF requirements.

Plan the approval stages

After approval in principle, accommodation and health-insurance evidence must be completed before final approval. A required entry visa is a separate step, followed by biometrics in Malta. The permit lasts one year; renewal is conditional.

The checklist warns that an application receipt does not extend an existing lawful stay. Keep a separate calendar for your present immigration permission, document deadlines and intended move. Review the official checklist again immediately before submitting.
