A connecting flight is still an immigration question. The UK’s transit guidance distinguishes passengers who remain airside from those who pass through border control. The correct route depends on the actual connection and the traveller’s circumstances.
Establish how the connection works
Ask the airline whether you must collect baggage, change airports or otherwise pass border control. Do not assume that two flights on the same day automatically make a connection airside.
GOV.UK describes a Direct Airside Transit visa for relevant travellers changing flights without passing border control and a separate Visitor in Transit route for relevant border-crossing connections. Exemptions and other conditions must be checked through the official guidance.
Review the whole itinerary
For planning, write down the arrival airport, onward airport, transfer arrangements and departure time. Include the destination’s entry requirements as a separate check. Permission to transit does not settle whether you can enter the next country.
Keep booking references and any relevant residence or visa documents together. If an airline changes a flight, reassess the connection rather than assuming the previous answer still applies.
Check before buying a tight connection
A low fare can be poor value if the itinerary needs a permission you do not have. Resolve uncertainty before committing, especially when changing airports or using separate tickets.
Use the government’s current transit checker and guidance for your nationality and circumstances. For an ambiguous itinerary, ask a precise question of the airline and the relevant authority. The phrase “I’m only changing planes” does not by itself determine the immigration requirement.
