Accompanying a young child to a UK school: the parent visa limits to check

The Parent of a Child Student route is limited by the child’s age, school and immigration status. Plan care, finances and departure before treating a school place as a family relocation route.

A place at a UK school does not automatically give both parents permission to move with their child. The Parent of a Child Student visa has narrow conditions, so families should check the parent’s route alongside the child’s application.

Check the child’s age and school first

GOV.UK limits this route to a parent whose child has, or is applying for, Child Student permission, including eligible existing Tier 4 (Child) permission. The child must be aged 4 to 11 when the parent applies and attend an independent school. Only one parent can accompany the child under this route; the other parent must live abroad.

The parent must maintain a main home outside the UK and be able to support the stay. Permission ends when the child’s visa expires or the child turns 12, whichever comes first. Paid work, study and starting a business are prohibited, and the route does not allow a switch to another visa.

Build the parent’s own evidence file

The documentary checklist includes a current passport or valid travel document and evidence of a permanent home overseas. Financial evidence is normally required, with an exception in the published guidance for applicants who have already spent at least 12 months in the UK on valid permission. A tuberculosis certificate may be needed depending on the applicant’s circumstances; documents outside English or Welsh may need certified translations.

Applications from abroad are made online before travel. The published application guidance allows submission up to six months before the planned journey and explains the identity and biometric appointment process. Follow the instructions issued for the particular application.

Plan the point when care arrangements change

Before committing to accommodation, put the child’s twelfth birthday and visa expiry date on the same planning calendar. Ask the school how care would work if the parent must leave while the child remains in education. That conversation helps identify practical gaps; it does not replace immigration permission.
