The English requirement for a UK Skilled Worker application should be checked against the applicant's immigration history, not just the job title. Current GOV.UK guidance requires the relevant reading, writing, speaking and understanding skills at CEFR level B2 for new cases, with specific transitional treatment for some existing holders.
This is a rule to apply to the individual case, not a reason for every existing worker to book another test automatically.
The earlier-holder distinction
GOV.UK says someone who held the Skilled Worker visa before 8 January 2026 and is applying to extend or update it needs level B1 and does not need to prove English again. Switching from a Health and Care Worker visa also does not require proof again under the published guidance.
A person switching from a different visa needs level B2. Check the actual visa history before deciding which instruction applies.
A test is only one evidence route
The guidance also describes eligible UK school qualifications, qualifying English-taught degrees and nationality-based exemptions. An English-taught degree awarded by an institution outside the UK normally needs the specified Ecctis assessment to support this route.
Where a test is required, use a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider. A general language-course certificate should not be assumed to satisfy the immigration requirement.
Check before spending money
Our practical recommendation is to prepare a short evidence note: current visa, date of the relevant previous permission, application type and proposed proof of English. Compare each point with the live route guidance.
If relying on a degree, establish whether the institution and qualification fit the published conditions before paying for an assessment. If using a test, confirm the approved product and required skills before booking.
Keep the evidence consistent with the application and ask a qualified immigration adviser about uncertain transitional cases. Correct English evidence is one element of the application; it does not replace the separate sponsor, role, salary and other requirements.
