Checked on 20 October 2026. A long overseas stay deserves a residence-status check before you buy a return flight. The UAE government's residence guidance identifies a permit route for certain residents returning after more than six months abroad.
Check which authority applies
ICP's service expressly excludes residents of Dubai. If your residence was issued in Dubai, ask the relevant Dubai immigration authority about your case rather than submitting an ICP application because the service name looks suitable.
The ICP conditions also list exemptions for Golden, Green and Blue Residence holders, and a husband sponsored by his UAE-national wife, while their residence remains valid.
The ICP conditions to check
The application must be made from outside the UAE, after 180 days abroad, with more than 30 days of residence validity remaining. Evidence of a valid reason for the long absence is required. After approval, entry must occur within 30 days, counting the approval date.
The service lists AED 100 for each month of delay after six months, plus AED 100 in smart-services fees. Confirm the assessed total in your application.
Prepare a dated record
Before contacting the authority, put your departure date, residence expiry, issuing emirate and intended return date together. Keep supporting evidence of the reason for your absence, such as the relevant study, employment or treatment records where applicable.
Those dates answer different questions. A card's printed expiry alone does not settle the effect of an extended absence. Likewise, a submitted application should not be treated as an approved return permit.
Once a decision arrives, compare its conditions with your proposed flight and keep an accessible copy for travel.
