Before adding a side trip outside Schengen, check the number of entries on your visa. A traveller can have unused days and still lack permission for another entry after leaving. The validity date alone does not settle the question.
Find the entry field
NetherlandsWorldwide explains that a single-entry visa permits one entry from outside the Schengen area. A double-entry visa permits two, while MULT indicates multiple entries. Check the territorial validity and authorised duration as well as the start and end dates.
Movement between Schengen countries is not the same as leaving Schengen and returning. The important boundary for this check is the area's external border, not simply a change of country name.
Test the itinerary before adding a stop
Consider an illustrative trip from Dubai to Paris, then London, then Amsterdam. The return from London involves another Schengen entry. That is different from continuing between Paris and Amsterdam without leaving the area.
Mark every part of your own itinerary as inside or outside Schengen. Count the planned entries from outside and compare them with the sticker. Include return flights and any detour added after the original booking.
Multiple entries do not mean unlimited days
A multiple-entry visa does not remove the authorised-stay limits. The rolling 90-days-in-180 rule may apply, and the visa can impose a shorter permitted stay. The Commission's calculator page specifically warns users to check the sticker where the authorised duration is under ninety days.
Keep a dated travel record so you are not reconstructing the trip from memory when a border or airline question arises.
Your next step
Use the official sticker guide below before buying the additional leg. If the planned journey needs an entry your visa does not permit, ask the issuing authority about the appropriate solution or revise the itinerary. Do not assume a paid airline ticket, unused hotel reservation or remaining visa days overrides the entry count.
