Checked on 20 October 2026. Two descriptions of a 14-day Oman visit can lead to different conclusions about staying longer. Travellers should identify the permission they actually hold before assuming that a short visit can be extended.
The new category is already in force
Oman's Foreign Ministry reported on 3 August 2026 that an amendment introduced a free 14-day tourist visa. It says the decision was published in Official Gazette No. 1659 on 2 August and took effect the following day.
The competent authority may grant the category to nationals it designates, under its specified conditions. The announcement does not establish that every GCC resident qualifies automatically.
Holders may replace this new visa, before it expires, with another tourist category, provided they meet that category's requirements and pay its prescribed fees. That is a conditional replacement procedure, not an automatic extra fortnight.
Why the other 14-day guidance matters
The ministry's separate entry-visa page describes a visa-exemption facility for listed nationalities. That page says its 14-day stay cannot be extended or converted into a residence visa. It also sets supporting requirements, including passport validity, accommodation, a return ticket, insurance and sufficient funds.
Do not apply the replacement provision to a visa-exempt entry without confirmation from the Royal Oman Police. The wording of your entry record and the category granted matter more than the phrase “14 days”.
Before planning a longer stay
Ask ROP which category you hold, whether replacement is available in your circumstances and what must be completed before expiry. Provide your nationality, entry date and permission details.
For a visit already expected to exceed two weeks, check an appropriate longer tourist route before departure. This avoids building an itinerary around an unconfirmed change after arrival.
