Working remotely from New Zealand: overseas clients are the key distinction

Visitor-visa conditions can allow overseas remote work, but local work and paid-in-kind collaborations fall outside that permission. Tax needs a separate check.

A New Zealand holiday does not necessarily require an overseas freelancer to stop all client work. Immigration New Zealand says visitor visas applied for on or after 27 January 2025 allow remote work for an overseas employer or client.

This is an existing visitor condition, not a newly launched standalone digital-nomad visa. The main distinction is who the work is for and whether it requires being in New Zealand.

Keep the work overseas in substance

The current guidance permits remote activity for businesses or clients outside New Zealand. It excludes work for a New Zealand employer, work requiring physical presence in the country, and work exchanged for goods or services with a New Zealand business or person.

For example, a complimentary local hotel stay in return for promotional content should not be assumed to fit the overseas remote-work permission. Non-cash rewards can matter too.

Document the arrangement clearly

Our preparation recommendation is to keep a short description of the remote work, the overseas contracting party and the activities planned during the visit. Compare that with the conditions on the actual visa.

If a client asks for local meetings, on-site delivery or a collaboration with a New Zealand business, pause and recheck the immigration position before agreeing. The location of the bank account receiving payment does not fully describe the work arrangement.

Treat tax as a separate review

Immigration New Zealand warns that remote work may create tax obligations and directs travellers to Inland Revenue. Immigration permission is not a general exemption from tax.

For a longer or repeated stay, keep a record of the days spent in the country and seek advice relevant to your tax residence and income. Avoid relying on a single day-count headline without checking its conditions.

Finally, align accommodation and return arrangements with the stay actually permitted. The remote-work condition can make a visit more flexible, but it does not by itself extend the visa, authorise local employment or settle the traveller's tax position.
