This week’s India–New Zealand trade announcement brings an important future date for students: 16 November 2026. Indian graduates with New Zealand PhDs are due to become eligible for post-study work visas lasting up to four years, according to Immigration New Zealand’s announcement of the India–New Zealand visa commitments. That benefit is announced, but it has not started as of 21 October.
A separate change affects graduate diplomas
Another reform, announced on 10 September, also begins on 16 November. The September announcement extends eligibility to people who complete an NZQCF Level 7 graduate diploma through full-time study in New Zealand and also hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or overseas. The diploma must have been studied for its full duration; cross-crediting and recognition of prior learning do not meet that condition.
For this group, the announced visa duration matches the time spent studying the diploma in New Zealand, with a maximum of one year. Applicants must supply the bachelor’s certificate and official transcript. This general reform should be read separately from the treaty’s four-year provision for Indian PhD graduates.
Match the qualification to the application
The current Post-Study Work Visa explains why the exact qualification and timing matter. It has separate application windows depending on the course and visa history, requires evidence of completing the eligible study, and says a person can receive a Post-Study Work Visa only once. It also announces that applications will move fully online from 16 November.
A useful preparation file contains the qualification title and level, enrolment dates, completion evidence, transcript, existing student visa expiry and any previous post-study visa. These details let the applicant compare the course actually completed with the requirements, rather than rely on a university marketing summary.
The two announcements do not create immediate work permission for everyone graduating this month. Students should continue to follow their existing visa conditions while preparing, and check the operational instructions when the November changes take effect. A future eligibility change and a current permission to work are different questions, especially where a student visa expires before the launch date.
