Malaysia narrows Multiple Entry Visas: nationality and travel purpose now both matter

The official MYVISA portal limits MEVs from 1 September 2026 to 31 eligible nationalities and four stated purposes. Recheck multi-stop travel plans before applying.

A Malaysia itinerary that includes leaving the country and returning needs a fresh look at the entry permission for each leg. The official MYVISA portal says Multiple Entry Visa access changed from 1 September 2026, with eligibility limited by both nationality and purpose.

For someone planning Kuala Lumpur, a neighbouring destination and a second Malaysian stay, the number of entries can be as important as the visa's expiry date.

Four purposes are listed

The portal names Fly & Cruise, business, medical treatment and wedding tourism, and says the MEV is limited to 31 eligible nationalities. Ordinary tourism is not among those four stated purposes. A traveller should therefore not assume that a holiday with two Malaysian arrivals qualifies automatically.

The MYVISA FAQ separately describes the Single Entry Visa for a single journey, subject to nationality eligibility. An exemption from needing a visa is another question again: establish whether you need a visa before choosing a visa product.

Check the actual route through Malaysia

Map every crossing of the Malaysian border. A domestic flight and an international departure are different events. A booking website's description of a trip as a round trip does not establish the immigration permission needed for a return from another country.

When the plan is unclear, give the Malaysian mission the passport nationality, visit purpose and full itinerary. Ask which permission covers the proposed entries, rather than simply asking for the longest-valid visa.

Keep the application consistent

Use the official portal's current categories and supply evidence matching the real purpose. Do not label an ordinary holiday as business merely to access an MEV. If a travel agent submits the form, request a copy of the application and review it yourself.

Before paying for non-refundable flights, confirm the route for both arrivals. After issuance, read the number of entries and other conditions on the permission itself. A visa's validity period alone cannot tell you how many times it can be used.
