Germany Blocked Account: What to Check Before Sending Your Savings

A blocked account is one way to prove funds for certain German visas. Verify the amount, provider, fees and release process before making a transfer.

A blocked account can involve transferring a significant part of your savings before travelling to Germany. Check the account requirements and the provider separately. A professional website or an agent's recommendation is not proof of a government guarantee.

Confirm that it fits your visa route

The Federal Foreign Office describes a blocked account as one way of proving financial support for certain visa categories. The required amount depends on the purpose of the stay; use the competent mission or Consular Services Portal for the applicable figure.

Only a specified amount is available each month. Provider fees are additional, so the headline deposit is not necessarily the full cost of arranging the account.

Research the provider independently

The Foreign Office does not recommend providers or accept liability for their payment failures. It explains that its former provider list was removed and that inclusion had not represented an endorsement.

Before transferring money, ask the provider for its legal identity, complete charges, account terms and official payment instructions. Verify those details independently, especially if a broker sends replacement bank details late in the process. These are practical financial checks, not a government-approved provider list from Advise Visa.

Understand how access and closure work

The named beneficiary is the relevant mission or foreigners authority, but that beneficiary cannot withdraw your funds. Lifting the block requires the appropriate authority's agreement; the Foreign Office says a visa-refusal notice is sufficient to lift it where the application was rejected.

Read the provider's handling process as well. Ask how fees, transfer costs and the return of funds would be handled if your plans change. Keep the written answers with your application documents.

Your next step

Open the Foreign Office guidance below, identify the amount for your exact visa purpose and compare provider terms before paying. Do not send money to an agent's personal account on the promise that a blocked account will be arranged later. A funding document supports an application; it does not guarantee that the visa will be granted.
