Families planning a longer parent or grandparent visit to Canada should use the current Super Visa income guidance. IRCC changed the assessment from 31 March 2026, introducing alternative ways to establish financial support.
The change concerns how qualifying income is demonstrated. It does not remove the rest of the Super Visa eligibility assessment or turn the application into permanent-residence sponsorship.
Start by counting the family correctly
The minimum necessary income depends on the family-size calculation. IRCC's checklist includes the visiting applicants, the host and relevant family members, and certain continuing hosting or sponsorship commitments.
Before comparing income with a threshold, make a written list of everyone the official rules require you to count. Using the wrong household total can undermine an otherwise well-organised evidence file.
Option one: either of two tax years
The current guidance allows the host's income, together with an eligible co-signer's income where applicable, to meet the required amount in either of the two tax years before submission. The supporting document for this option is the Canada Revenue Agency notice of assessment.
Identify the relevant year explicitly so the officer can follow the calculation without guessing which documents support it.
Option two: qualifying combined income
Under the second option, the host and applicable co-signer must have at least 75% of the required amount in the preceding year. The visiting applicant's income can cover the remainder. IRCC requires evidence that the applicant will continue earning that income while in Canada, with the currency identified.
For example, a continuing pension and a salary ending before travel should not be treated as equivalent without checking the evidence requirements.
Keep the financial calculation, supporting records and invitation letter consistent. Use the current official income table at filing time and complete the separate insurance, medical and other eligibility checks. A stronger income route helps only when the complete application satisfies the programme's conditions.
