Does a US Visa Qualify a GCC Resident for Canada’s eTA?

Only certain passport holders can use Canada’s conditional eTA route. Nationality, previous visas and the way you enter Canada all matter.

Checked on 20 October 2026. A US visa can help some travellers qualify for a Canadian electronic travel authorisation, but it is not a universal shortcut for everyone living in the Gulf.

Three conditions must line up

For IRCC's conditional route, you must hold a passport from its eligible visa-required country list, be travelling temporarily and fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. You must also have held a Canadian visitor visa within the previous ten years or hold a US non-immigrant visa valid when you apply.

The current list includes the Philippines, Morocco, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, among other countries. India and Pakistan are not on that list. A UAE residence permit does not substitute for an eligible passport under this route.

A road trip or cruise changes the answer

Travellers using this conditional route still need a visitor visa for arrival by car, bus, train or boat, including a cruise. Someone who qualifies for an eTA flight from Dubai should therefore check again before adding a US-to-Canada land crossing.

These are the rules for the conditional route. Canada's general eligibility page separately explains visa-exempt travellers, US permanent residents and other exemptions.

Apply through the official service

Canada's eTA application costs CAN$7. The government says applicants need a valid passport, a credit or debit card and an email address. Use the official application link below and review the answers before payment.

Check every family member separately; eligibility is personal. If you already hold a valid Canadian visitor visa, IRCC says you can continue using it and do not need an eTA simply to fly. An authorisation also does not remove the need to satisfy the border officer that you qualify to enter.
