If your Canadian PR card expires while you are abroad, address the return-travel document before going to the airport. The question is not simply whether you have previously lived in Canada, but whether you hold the document needed for the commercial journey home.
Check whether you need a PRTD
IRCC describes a permanent resident travel document, or PRTD, for permanent residents outside Canada who do not have a valid PR card and are returning by airplane, boat, train or bus. The situation may involve an expired, lost, stolen or damaged card, or travel before a card was received.
IRCC assesses the application, including permanent-resident status and residency obligations. Treat it as an immigration application, not an airline-issued substitute boarding pass.
Apply through the official route
The official page links the forms, checklist and Permanent Residence Portal. It requires a complete application for each family member who needs a PRTD. Follow the passport-submission instructions if the application is approved.
The document is normally for one entry. IRCC says to apply for a new PR card after returning. Do not assume repeated travel is covered by the document used for the first return.
Handle an urgent trip with evidence
IRCC has separate urgent guidance for people outside Canada travelling back within the next five days. It asks for travel evidence, a trip-payment receipt, an explanation and relevant proof of urgency. Check the current instructions; urgency is not a promise that a document will arrive before a booked departure.
As a practical step, gather a clear record of travel and residence before completing the application. Guessing dates can create inconsistencies that are harder to resolve later.
Your next step
Open IRCC's PRTD page below and read the linked checklist before paying or submitting. If the return is urgent, use the separate urgent instructions. Do not apply for an ordinary visitor document merely to avoid dealing with your permanent-resident travel requirements.
