Canada Biometrics: Are Your Old Fingerprints Still Valid?

Before booking another appointment, check your Canadian biometrics record and whether its expiry could shorten a new temporary-resident document.

If you previously gave biometrics for Canada, do not assume you need a fresh appointment for every visitor application. Equally, do not assume that an old collection receipt guarantees the longest possible visa. The expiry of the biometric record matters.

Check the record first

IRCC says biometrics for temporary-resident applications are generally valid for ten years. Valid biometrics are normally attached to a new visitor, study or work application automatically. Use the official status tool linked from IRCC's biometrics page to check the actual expiry date.

There are exceptions and reasons to collect again. Read the instructions for your application instead of relying only on the general ten-year rule.

Understand why expiry can matter

IRCC cannot issue the relevant visa or permit beyond the biometrics expiry. Its visitor guidance also explains that passport expiry and the officer's assessment can affect visa validity. Giving biometrics again does not promise a ten-year visa.

If you choose to give them again while applying, IRCC describes paying the applicable fee, waiting for the new biometric instruction letter and using that letter for the appointment. Once a document has been issued, fresh biometrics alone do not extend its validity.

Prepare a small date checklist

Write down your passport expiry, biometric expiry and intended travel dates. Keep those dates separate from the expiry of any existing visa. This practical comparison helps you identify questions before you pay a provider to arrange another appointment.

For example, a passport lasting several more years does not remove an earlier biometric expiry. The reverse is also true: a recent biometric collection does not renew a passport.

Your next step

Open IRCC's temporary-resident biometrics guidance below and follow its status-tool link. If a new appointment is required, use the instruction letter for the current application and an official collection location. Keep the receipt, but remember that completing biometrics is one application step, not evidence that the visa has been approved.
