News report · Checked 21 October 2026.

Canada issued 5,000 invitations in its French-language proficiency Express Entry round on 16 October 2026. The lowest invited CRS score was 435, according to IRCC official Express Entry round data. Round 450 used a tie-breaking timestamp of 6 October 2026 at 21:31:22 UTC.

This was a category-based round for eligible French-speaking candidates. Its threshold should not be read as a general Express Entry cut-off, and it does not show that language skills alone are sufficient for permanent residence.

French proficiency sits alongside program eligibility

IRCC’s Express Entry for French-speaking skilled workers explains that a candidate must first qualify for an immigration program managed through Express Entry to enter the pool. The profile is then ranked using information about skills and experience. Category selection and the underlying program requirements work together.

For someone assessing this route, that means two separate reviews: whether the person meets a managed program’s criteria, and whether the language evidence meets the category requirements applicable to the round. An encouraging draw score should not replace either review.

Check the test and the expiry date

Canada’s Express Entry language test results lists TEF Canada and TCF Canada as accepted French tests. It requires results to be less than two years old both when completing the profile and when submitting the permanent-residence application. Speaking, listening, reading and writing are assessed individually, so an overall impression of fluency is not the same as the required test evidence.

A preparation plan should record each ability’s result, the test date, certificate details and expected expiry. Compare the numbers entered in the profile with the original report. If a retest is needed, account for appointment availability and the time required to receive results.

The October outcome may make French-language preparation a worthwhile area to evaluate, but no course provider can guarantee a future invitation. Language training takes time, and future thresholds depend on the eligible pool and the invitations issued. Candidates who have already been selected should prioritise the instructions in their own account. Those still preparing should use this week’s draw as evidence of a real selection route while building a complete, accurate profile.
