Checked on 20 October 2026. A UK workshop or vocational competition may now fit more clearly within the visitor rules, following changes that took effect on 8 October. This is an implemented change, not a proposal awaiting approval.
What changed
Statement of Changes HC 584 adds workshops and debates to the general business activities list and expressly permits participation in skills competitions. It also allows artists, entertainers and musicians to attend rehearsals within the relevant creative-activity provisions.
For qualifying training received by overseas employees, the amendment removes the requirement that the training be unavailable in their home country. Other conditions still matter. The changes do not create unrestricted permission to take a UK job.
Applications made before 8 October are subject to the transitional provision in the statement, which preserves the rules in force on 7 October for those applications.
Match the itinerary to the activity
For a UAE employee attending a London workshop, a useful planning file would include the agenda, host's invitation and an explanation of how the event relates to the overseas role. These are practical ways to make the purpose clear, rather than a universal mandatory document list.
Describe what you will actually do. Observing a demonstration, giving training and delivering a client's project can raise different questions even when an organiser calls all three a workshop.
Check payment and entry permission separately
GOV.UK's business-visitor guidance distinguishes permitted unpaid business activities from specific permitted paid engagements. Work outside the allowed visitor activities can require a work visa, including some unpaid work.
Before booking, check both your activity against the current rules and your personal visa requirement. The event invitation does not itself grant entry permission. If the host expects practical duties or UK payment, resolve the exact arrangement before choosing the visitor route.
