UKVI updated its domestic-abuse immigration guidance on 15 October to reflect an expansion of Appendix Victim of Domestic Abuse. Eligible people aged 18 or over who were granted permission as children on specified routes can now apply as main applicants. The underlying change took effect on 8 October, rather than on the publication update date.

The detailed caseworker guidance says qualifying adult children can seek permission independently, without a parent applying alongside them. It also introduces a validity requirement connected to the person’s previous immigration permission. The change is not a general settlement route for every adult who has experienced family abuse.

Why previous immigration history matters

Applicants need to establish both the relevant relationship and the qualifying immigration category. The guidance describes circumstances in which the relationship with a sponsoring parent has broken down because of domestic abuse. It also addresses applicants abandoned overseas. Different factual situations can require different evidence and application procedures.

Someone considering this route should arrange a confidential assessment with a qualified immigration adviser and, where needed, a specialist support organisation. Prepare a timeline of immigration permissions, family relationships and relevant events. Preserve copies of documents where it is safe to do so. Do not put yourself at risk to obtain paperwork or assume that a particular document is indispensable without advice.

Keep settlement and immediate support separate

The government’s public application guide also explains fee assistance and the Migrant Victims of Domestic Abuse Concession. Those support questions should be checked separately from eligibility for permanent status. A person may need advice about accommodation, access to funds and safe account access while their immigration position is assessed.

The practical value of this update is that some adult children can now present their own case instead of assuming their options depend entirely on a parent’s application. It is still necessary to match the individual’s history to the precise route. A headline cannot replace that assessment, especially where previous permission, overseas abandonment or several family members are involved.
