Travellers flying or sailing between Italy and Spain should allow for temporary internal border checks. The European Commission’s notification list, dated 16 October, records Italian controls at internal air and sea borders with Spain from 16 to 23 October 2026.

The same list records Spanish controls at internal air and sea borders with Italy from 8 to 22 October. These are notified periods, not a guarantee that every control will disappear automatically without further updates. Travellers should check the latest national and carrier information close to departure.

Internal checks do not mean a new visa area

The Commission’s general explanation says Schengen countries may temporarily restore controls in response to serious public-policy or security threats. The mechanism is intended to be exceptional and time-limited. It should not be confused with either country leaving Schengen.

For passengers, the immediate issue is the possibility of a document check on a journey that might normally feel like an internal European connection. Carry the passport or other travel document appropriate to your status and keep relevant visa or residence evidence accessible. Follow your airline or ferry operator’s instructions about arrival time.

Review tight connections

If the trip includes a short onward connection, consider how an additional check could affect the transfer. Confirm whether baggage, terminal changes or separate bookings already make the itinerary fragile. The presence of checks does not mean a delay is certain, but it is a sensible reason to avoid assuming that a connection will be frictionless.

Keep travel-day information separate from political reports about a planned end to the measures. A statement that governments intend to coordinate removal is useful context; the operative notice and actual border instructions are what matter for the journey.

This week’s official list provides a concrete route-specific update. It does not establish a new visa requirement for all European travel, and it should not be generalised to every land, air or sea crossing in the Schengen area. Recheck the named route and dates before departure.
