A cheap connection through Paris can become an expensive mistake if the ticket is checked only for destination requirements. Afghan passport holders should examine the French transit requirement even when the plan is to remain in the airport.
Check whether an airport-transit visa applies
France-Visas lists ordinary, service and special Afghan passports among documents generally requiring an airport-transit visa for a non-Schengen to non-Schengen connection through the international zone of an airport in metropolitan France.
Exemptions exist for specified visas, residence permits and other categories. Read the exact list using the documents you hold. Living in another country is not, by itself, proof that its residence card creates an exemption.
Check whether the connection actually stays airside
An airport-transit visa does not authorise entry into the Schengen area. France-Visas says a connection between two Schengen airports requires a valid short-stay Schengen visa. It also addresses airports that close overnight during the connection.
Ask the airline whether baggage collection, a change of airport or the booked itinerary requires passing immigration. Do this for the return journey as well: different flights can mean a different transit situation.
Map the trip before paying
A useful planning note lists every airport in order, the terminals, the connection time, whether bags are checked through and the documents supporting any claimed exemption. This makes it easier to ask a precise question instead of asking only whether an Afghan traveller can transit France.
For example, a connection that continues to another Schengen airport needs a different analysis from a flight that continues directly outside Schengen. Do not treat every ticket labelled transit as the same journey.
